Chelsea player Levi Colwill impresses Pochettino with display versus City

Following Chelsea 1-1 draw with Manchester City, manager Mauricio Pochettino faces a quandary. With injuries to Thiago Silva and Benoit Badiashile, Pochettino, who has primarily deployed Levi Colwill at left-back this season, had to utilize the 20-year-old in central defense.

Naturally a centre-back, Colwill’s shift wasn’t a disaster for Chelsea boss. It turned out favorably, sparking intrigue about Pochettino’s future decisions.

Colwill’s display against City warrants his retention in Chelsea defensive core. Teaming up with Axel Disasi, he excelled, significantly contributing to restricting the Premier League and European champions to a solitary goal.

According to WhoScored, Colwill registered 10 clearances in the Etihad draw, second only to Disasi’s 16. He also blocked two shots, ranking third highest in his team. Overall, a commendable performance from the English youngster.

Will Colwill play a center back for Chelsea in the future?

Silva has been Chelsea’s preferred left-sided center-back, with Badiashile stepping in before getting injured. The Blues have depth in this position, so Pochettino may need to rotate between them until the season’s end.

Silva’s potential departure from Chelsea upon contract expiry in the summer could simplify matters for the Argentine manager. He would then only need to decide between Colwill and Badiashile, unless the club recruits a new center-half.

Currently, it poses a dilemma, though not the direst one. Chelsea manager boasts three strong choices for the left center-back role. Colwill’s performance serves as a reminder of his versatility despite his season-long stint at left-back.
