Chelsea have agreed on personal terms with Leicester defender Wesley Fofana

Chelsea are in advanced talks with Leicester’s Wesley Fofana after they agreed on personal terms with the defender. However, the Blues would still have to cajole the Foxes into releasing the Frenchman this summer for a transfer. This was reported by journalist Ignazio Genuardi.

Chelsea lost the services of their key defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen this season. Therefore, the Blues are desperate to sign three defenders this term to cover their absence in defense.

They have already signed Kalidou Koulibaly to strengthen their defense. However, still they need two more defenders. Genuardi reports that Fofana is now Chelsea’s target after they missed out on Sevilla’s Jules Kounde. The obstacle now, therefore, is to get Leicester to approve the 21-year-old’s exit.

A disappointing transfer window for Chelsea this time

Chelsea missed out on key players especially Barcelona this term in the current transfer window. They missed out on Raphinha, Kounde, De Ligt, and Nathan Ake. However, there is lots of time for the transfer window to close. Therefore, Fofana now looks like a plausible option this time.

Fofana came to Leicester in 2020 from Saint-Etienne. However, he quickly grew into one of the most important defenders for his team over these two years. However, he missed a majority of matches with a serious injury last season. He then came back in March and helped his team to achieve a top position in the Premier League.

It is said that Fofana would not come off cheap from the club. He recently signed a five-year contract with the Foxes. CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs reported that a club would have to shell out £70million to sign the Frenchman. However, the primary question that remains is whether Leicester would be ready to let off Fofana. They are still the only team yet to make a transfer. Moreover, they need to offload players in order to sign new players. It is a serious doubt whether they would let off a key player like Fofana.
