Reports suggest that a Chelsea player declined to participate in any EFL Cup matches this season. As per The Athletic, sources within the club revealed that defender Malang Sarr expressed his reluctance to be there for selection. Since, Chelsea aimed to secure their spot in the competition’s final.

Mauricio Pochettino is in the last stages of preparing for the EFL Cup final against Liverpool later this week. They have a genuine chance to claim the first major trophy of the year.

It would mark the manager’s inaugural trophy in England, with victories against teams like Brighton, Newcastle, and Middlesbrough propelling them to the opportunity at Wembley. Notably, Sarr, relegated to the U21s for most of the season, will not feature in any capacity.

Chelsea should definitely release Sarr in the upcoming transfer window

Despite reportedly earning £120k-a-week, the defender’s exclusion sheds light on the challenges the club faced. That is in offloading him during the previous transfer windows.

Under the new manager, he has not seen any playing time. With the manager even suggesting in early press conferences that he was unsure of the player’s identity. Consequently, it’s understandable that he reportedly opted out of EFL Cup selection, where he would have had the best chance of featuring.

Considering recent performances of Chelsea, the center-back roles for the final should be straightforward. Following an impressive outing against Manchester City, Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill deserve the nod. Especially facing a potentially weakened Liverpool attack.
