Chelsea are desperate to sign Amadou Onana from Everton

Wright Chelsea's Potter

Chelsea is reportedly engaging in discussions to acquire a midfielder from one of their Premier League counterparts. Meanwhile negotiations with Everton for a potential deal involving Amadou Onana have commenced, as per Voetbalkrant.

However, he won’t come cheap. As the same outlet suggests that Everton won’t entertain selling the 22-year-old for less than €60m. Chelsea already boasts strong midfield choices, including Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Yet, Romeo Lavia has struggled with fitness this season, and Conor Gallagher’s potential departure looms as his contract winds down. Tottenham Hotspur reportedly stands ready to swoop for him if he doesn’t commit to a new deal.

Should Lavia resolve his injury issues and Gallagher stay at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea may not have a pressing need to sign Onana. However, with the possibility of Gallagher departing and considering the current situation, it’s understandable for the club to explore alternative options.

Chelsea will benefit if they secure Onana

Commencing negotiations for Onana may appear premature, yet the Belgian international proves himself as a solid midfielder. This season, he averages 2.5 tackles per game in the Premier League, ranking fourth highest in Everton’s squad. This figure closely aligns with Gallagher’s current average of 2.4 tackles per game.

Ideally, Chelsea would retain Gallagher, who not only excels at winning the ball but has also demonstrated his goal-scoring ability. The England international scored three times in Chelsea’s recent victories against Crystal Palace in the Premier League and Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

Nevertheless, Mauricio Pochettino may need to start planning for life after Gallagher soon, with Onana potentially emerging as a successor.
