Chelsea have had their problems with strikers for some years now.
Their record-signing strikers could not deliver the expected results.
Moreover, one has been shown the door and another is staring at an exit, most probably.
“I want to try and help them win more titles.”
This was what Romelu Lukaku said after his much pompous return to Stamford Bridge last year.
Lukaku carved his name as one of the best strikers that season representing Inter Milan. Therefore, he was expected to carry on that form of his when he was signed by Chelsea authorities in 2021. However, he was far from his best when he played for the Blues, the previous year.
Therefore, the questions that arose were inevitable- was the signing of Lukaku necessary? Another unsuccessful signing was of Timo Werner back in 2020. The German was relentless for RB Leipzig in that season.
However, he failed to replicate that form of his in the Blues jersey.
In this article, we study the tale of two failed strikers at the London club.
Chelsea’s failed experiments- the Lukaku saga and Werner’s failure
Leaving Manchester United and signing for Inter, indeed recovered his form. He even acknowledged this.
At Inter, he featured in 72 games and scored 47 goals during that tenure. He was largely instrumental in leading the club to a Serie A title after many years.
This form attracted Chelsea’s interest and they signed him last year for an eye-popping sum of £97.5million on a five-year deal. However, neither could he justify his price tag nor could he carry on his form from Inter through the season. Moreover, he got was engaged in some disagreements with the head coach Thomas Tuchel.
Timo Werner was a different case of a failed experiment for Chelsea. He was given ample chances to showcase his talent in his first season at Stamford Bridge. However, he never came up to the expectations.
Therefore, after that, he was made to come off the bench at regular intervals. Lukaku’s signing last year was essential because of his failure to score goals for the Blues.
Now, he is staring at an exit this summer.
