Manchester United are yet to make the first signing of their ‘Erik ten Hag era’. The new manager has already started working with the club’s recruiting team to acquire the players he wants. However, United are yet to kick-start their business in the summer transfer market. While United are linked with a lot of names, one player who has surprisingly made the list is Christian Eriksen. Reports from last week suggested that the Red Devils want Eriksen who is available for free this summer. The Denmark international is yet to sign an extension with Brentford and is further looking for an exit.
Brentford signed Eriksen on the deadline day of the winter transfer market for free. The midfielder took the field for the first time since his recovery from the cardiac arrest he suffered last year at the EUROs. However, Eriksen showed no signs of slowing down as he went on to play 11 out of Brentford’s remaining 15 Premier League games. As a result, Ten Hag is keen on Eriksen and Brentford boss Thomas Frank may have just explained what would the 30-year-old offer to United.
Frank details key aspects that Eriksen would bring to United
Many raised their eyebrows as a reaction to United showing their interest in signing Christian Eriksen. The Red Devils were expected to be pursuing relatively younger options than the Dane. However, at 30 Eriksen could still offer a lot to this United team, as suggested by Thomas Frank. The Brentford boss got to work with the former Tottenham midfielder for 6 months and has now elaborated on his astute qualities. United for sure would have taken a not of Frank’s words as they look to acquire Eriksen for free.
While highlighting Eriksen’s time at Brentford Thomas Frank said,
“I don’t think it could have gone any better. People ask me: ‘Are you surprised by his level?’ No. I think maybe when I watch more games with him, training sessions, and watch the games back. I have a feeling that he plays with an extra edge. Of course I ask him about it. It just feels like he plays with a combination of freedom, that little extra determination. He’s enjoying it. He’s a maestro on the pitch.”
The Brentford manager didn’t stop there as he further analyzed Eriksen who could be on his way to United.
“He’s the one that dictates the games. He’s always been running and covering a lot of ground but his recovery runs, his willingness to come back into the box and clear balls, heading balls away, that you have to do when you play for Brentford, has been remarkable. I haven’t seen that from him earlier in his career. It seems like he, I don’t know, maybe cares a little bit more about everything,”
added Frank.
All his words indicate that United could be on the right path in pursuing Eriksen. The midfielder has still got it as evident from his 11 games, where he provided 4 assists and scored a goal as well. However, Eriksen is no new to the Premier League. The Dane played 226 games for Tottenham Hotspur in his seven seasons there, scoring an impressive 51 goals and providing 67 assists.
