Barcelona looking to hold on to De Jong

Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona‘s president has reportedly said that Frenkie de Jong is not for sale. The Dutch international was linked with a move away from Barcelona for quite some time now. The 25-year-old reportedly was headed to Manchester for Barcelona to be able to generate some funds quickly.

Frenkie de Jong could have helped Barcelona land Bernardo Silva

The playmaker would make the Catalan club somewhere around £70m. This would help them land Bernardo Silva from the other side of Manchester.

Laporta said:

“I’m going to do everything I can in my power so that Frenkie stays here, but there’s also a salary issue and that would have to be adjusted.”

The Dutch Playmaker made 98 La Liga appearances and 24 Champions League appearances for the Catalan giants. He scored 8 goals and 9 assists till now in La Liga and 2 assists in UCL.

It is still unclear if De-Jong has agreed to a long-term contract tying him to the club till 2026.

It was earlier suggested that de Jong would be let go to save the alleged £75m on his wages. Though it now seems that he would start the campaign with Barcelona adding to his tally of 138 matches played across all tournaments.

Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe has praised the club for their handling of the ongoing Frenkie de Jong transfer saga. Sharpe reportedly said:

“I think the manager will have a really good relationship with him”

“It’s a shame that it’s taking so long. But I think if the manager really wants him, and that’s his No.1 target, they have to be patient and try to get it across the line as soon as they can.”

The former winger also praised de Jong by calling him a “marquee player”.

Manchester will still look to sign the Dutch midfielder in hopes of doing better in the league with other transfers too. Frenkie will assist the likes of Paulo Dybala who is a free agent now. Ten hag will look to take this opportunity to strengthen his squad.
