Barcelona signed Sergio Aguero from Manchester City as a free agent. Unfortunately to his demise, Aguero has to retire because of a heart injury. The club is in dire need of a striker and is looking in the market.
Talking about specifics, they are targeting players whose contracts are ending or others who are in search of game time.
According to Metro UK, Barcelona has made contact with Anthony Martial.
The club is currently full of talented youngsters. Pedri, Gavi and others are creative, technical rather than good at only finishing. Barcelona’s only striker/winger Fati is injured but in the meantime, Xavi wants a senior striker.
Memphis Depay is inconsistent and he has admitted this in an interview. If Depay gets back to form he can only do a part of the job but not entirely. The only backup to Depay is Luuk De Jong. Talking realistically, for a club like Barcelona both Depay and De Jong are not of their calibre. What will be the hierarchy of strikers at United under Rangnick?
Anthony Martial has struggled to make his mark at Manchester United, even in this season he has not started any match. Martial has scored only 1 goal in nine very poor appearances. Earlier when United signed him in 2015, he was considered as one of the best for the club but everything went downhill. Martial has since then has a total of 80 goals and 50 assists in 266 appearances for United.
Edinson Cavani left PSG for a new challenge and Manchester United was desperate to sign a new striker at that time. Since Martial was not showing signs of getting back to form, Cavani played in his spot. Edinson Cavani broke the number 7 curse at Manchester United, he despite his age barrier showed that he is still a great striker. However, the arrival of Ronaldo has drastically reduced his game time.
Likely, Martial will not play anymore at Manchester United. It is questionable whether the likes of Ronaldo will even play under Rangnick. Since the club is in search of new strikers, they can look to drop Martial and Ronaldo as well.
