Arsenal finally signed a player in this January transfer window but it wasn’t the exact incoming that the fans were hoping for as the US international Auston Trusty has joined the north London club on the deadline day.
Following a productive season with Colorado Rapids in MLS, the defender caught the attention of the Premier League giants, scoring a solitary goal and keeping 12 clean sheets in 34 league appearances.
The club has confirmed the permanent signing of Auston Trusty and stated that the 23-years-old will stay with the MLS side on loan until the end of this Premier League campaign. The Gunners have also revealed that they are not looking to infuse the player in the squad just yet. As the US man will go out on loan in any of the European leagues in the summer to continue his development.
Can Auston Trusty establish himself as a starter for Arsenal?
Although signing a young promising player is a good business from Arsenal, buying a new attacker would have been a better decision by the club’s hierarchy. The Gunners signed the 23-years-old with an eye for the long-term future. However, they needed to strengthen the forward line in this winter transfer window.
Following the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Mikel Arteta’s side is very light in their attacking options. As only Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are the two players who will be the main striker.
However, both of those players’ contracts will expire at the end of this season. And the Hale End graduate has already expressed his desire not to extend his contract with the north London club. On the other hand, the Frenchman hasn’t displayed enough goal-scoring prowess to earn a new contract at the Emirates Stadium stadium. And on top of that, he will be 31-year-old at the end of this season.
Therefore, keeping the situation of Mesut Ozil, Aubameyang and Willian in mind. The Gunners hierarchy would not want to award a big contract to the Frenchman. So, it will be interesting to see what the club management decide to do with their striker situation.
After failing to sign a new forward, Arsenal might struggle to stay in the hunt for the top four race. Tottenham Hotspur who are in the race to finish in the Champions League position, have strengthened their squad in January. So, they would be the favourite to clinch the fourth spot.
