Atalanta have reportedly set a £52 million price tag on Manchester United target Cristian Romero as per the report in Tuttosport

The 23-years-old defender has spent the 2020-21 season on loan at La Dea from Juventus. And Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are expected to trigger the option to buy the defender permanently for £11.8 million this summer.

Romero has shown his talent in Atalanta’s run for the third-placed finish in the recently concluded Serie A season. The Argentine defender made 42 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and assists each.

The defender has good pace and is also good in the air. Romero could be a perfect partner for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire. As both central defenders can complement each other.

Will Manchester United buy Romero this summer?

According to the report in Tuttosport, Atalanta are not looking to sell Cristian Romero this summer despite the growing interest from Manchester United and elsewhere.

The report also stated that Manchester United are interested in Romero and the Red Devils are willing to pay around €45 million. Although, the official negotiations regarding the potential transfer have not been started yet.

However, if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side pay the mentioned amount then Atalanta would accept the offer. Because Gasperini’s side will gain €25 million in just one year. But, the amount of £52 million or €60 million would be ‘crazy’ for Romero according to the report.

After finishing distant second in the Premier League, Manchester United are searching for a World-class centre-back this summer, to close the gap to Manchester City. The number one target is mentioned the World Cup winner Raphael Varane. The defender has only one year remaining in his current contract with Real Madrid.

However, Romero could be an option if Manchester United fail to secure the French defender’s signature. As the Argentine international is still very young and has plenty of time left to develop. Alongside Maguire, the 23-years-old defender can become an integral part of Solskjaer’s defence.

It will be interesting to see who will become the Manchester United defender for next season among plenty of rumours. Varane would definitely be the dream for any United faithful. However, Romero could also be a very good alternative given his leadership qualities and abilities to adapt to different situations in no time.
