Aston Villa now in advanced talks to renew Douglas Luiz’s deal

Unai Emery Aston Villa Premier League

Aston Villa are edging closer to renewing Douglas Luiz’s contract this summer. This came as a surprise, as Villa were on verge of offloading him this season while he attracted interest from other Premier League clubs.

However, this U-turn came after the Midlands club failed to acquire their primary targets in the central midfield area this term. Villa now preparing to sign a long-term contract with the Brazilian to tie him to the club. The contract would be an improved one from the last one.

He has one year left on his current contract. This fuelled the speculation that the 24-year-old would leave this summer after he was targeted by Arsenal and Newcastle. Early this year, he had a £ 30 million bid from Newcastle which was turned down by Villa.

Aston Villa should in any way get Luiz to renew his contract

Villa right now cannot afford to let Luiz go and signing a new contract with him is a priority for Villa. Kalvin Phillips ditched them to join Manchester City. Moreover, their other top target Yves Bissouma was picked up by Tottenham in this current transfer window.

Luiz’s previous club City had a buy-back option on him. Moreover, Pep Guardiola has also described him to be ‘clever with the ball, he’s so physical and so strong’. Villa succeeded in signing Boubacar Kamara on a free transfer from French club Marseille.

Moreover, he is expected to give good competition to Luiz and John McGinn for their positions. Luiz played 35 matches for Villa the last term of which 31 came from the Premier League. He started 16 matches on a trot for Villa between December and March last season. The approximate £15m valued player featured in 111 games for Villa across all competitions.
