Arsenal target Mathias Olivera set to join Napoli in the coming days

Mathias Olivera

According to reports, Premier League giants Arsenal are interested in signing Getafe left-back Mathias Olivera. But the gunner’s pursuit may already be over. Reliable football journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Uraguian left-back is set to join Italian side Napoli.

Napoli were scouting Mathias Olivera over the January transfer window. But the deal could not be pushed over the line. Getafe were keen to keep hold of their star left-back until the end of the season at least. But reports suggest that Italian giants have had a full agreement in place to sign the left-back since January. The left-back will undergo medical to join Napoli later today.

The left-back has been a key ingredient in Getafe’s team over the last couple of years. Mathias Olivera has made a total of 32 appearances in the La Liga this term. In this time he has recorded one goal and three assists (stats via Transfermarkt)

With the Premier League coming to a conclusion. Arsenal misses out on Champions League football yet again. Mikel Arteta’s side had Champions League football in the bag. But the 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspurs and 2-0 loss to Newcastle United meant that the club missed out on the top four. But reports suggest that the manager will still have a significant budget to improve his team. The club are on the lookout for a new left-back, midfielder, and a new striker.

Who could Arsenal target instead of Mathias Olivera?

Kieran Tierney is the number one left-back at the club. But Nuno Tavares was signed as a backup to Tierney last summer. But the Portuguese left-back has failed to impress the Spanish manager and the Arsenal faithful. The club are scouting young Scottish left-back Aaron Hickey.

Aaron Hickey has made a total of 36 appearances in the Serie A for Bologna this term. In this time he has recorded five goals and one assist. (stats via Transfermarkt)

The gunners are also scouting with Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans and Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus. Tielemans and Jesus both look set to leave their clubs in favor of a new challenge somewhere else. While William Saliba is returning from a loan and he still looks like a complete new signing. Mikel Arteta will be hoping that the additions to the side next term can help his side return to Champions League football.
