Are Arsenal still interested in Lille’s Renato Sanches?

Arsenal Team

Arsenal has had a poor start to the 2020/21 season but Mikel Arteta brought a change in the team. They were undefeated in 9 games until Liverpool beat them. As of now, they sit 5th in the Premier League table.

The Arsenal board has made it clear that they will not repeat their past mistakes. They will not renew contracts of players who are old, the recent example is Lacazzete. The board’s main intention is to prevent anything which will hinder the young players’ development.

To keep the current team stable or strong enough they will participate in the transfer window. The Gooners are still interested in signing 23-year-old midfielder Renato Sanches. According to Fabrizio Romano’s Podcast Here We Go, Arsenal are ready to splash £45 million for Sanches.

Should Arsenal actually buy Renato Sanches?

Let’s take a look at Renato’s background. He first burst onto the scene in 2016 when he won the European Championship with Benfica. Unfortunately, things went downhill for the youngster after a disastrous move to Bayern and a horrible loan spell at Swansea. At Bayern, he simply could not compete with Vidal, Thiago and Xabi Alonso for playing time.

Sanches turned things around as he helped Lille to win their first league title in 10 years.

In the  2016 Euros, he was a part of the Portugal winning team. He even scored in the semi-finals and won the Young Player Of The Tournament. Sanches was compared to Clarence Seedorf and Edgar Davids. He can play as a holding midfielder, a box to box number 8 or even as a playmaker.

Can Sanches cement his name as one of Arsenal’s legendary midfielders?

Despite their poor form over the years, Arsenal is a legendary club with a rich history. Nothing will ever change their past accolades and the presence of legendary players as well.

The Gooners have had many legendary midfielders over the years. Let’s take a look at some midfielders (post-2000s) from the club.

Cesc Fabregas

The Spaniard youngster spent 6 years in the Barcelona academy and then realised he needed to leave. At that time he could not compete with any of the Barcelona players and chose to go to Arsenal.

Fabregas was very well gifted technically and very lethal in the final third. He provided many amazing performances for Arsenal over the years.

Robert Pires

The Frenchman was a vital part of the 2003-04 invincibles squad. He was a quick winger with great acceleration. Pires scored 15 plus goals for three consecutive seasons including the 2003-04 season.
