Arsenal: Reiss Nelson opens up on advice from Robin Van Persie

Robin van Persie

Reiss Nelson has said that he keeps regular contact with former Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie.

Van Persie was one of the most loved players at Arsenal until he left the club for Manchester United. Moreover, he was able to win the 2012/13 Premier League with United which angered the supporters more.

However, this does not change the fact that Van Persie was one of the more important players in Arsenal’s history. The only thing that tarnished his legacy was himself and he has nothing nor anyone else to blame. Although Van Persie could not be bothered as he won the Premier League something which he could have never achieved at Arsenal.

Nelson Reveals

Nelson has revealed his conversations with Van Persie who has given a fair bit of advice.

“Yeah, I speak with him, Sometimes he comes over on a Wednesday, before Europa Conference League games on a Thursday. I ask him about what positions I need to be getting in. Certain movements I need to be doing, certain finishes.”

Nelson hasn’t been nearly as good as the other youngster in the squad. The likes of Emile Smith-Rowe and Bukayo Saka are the best examples. However, Nelson is proud of the way his game is progressing.

“Coming through the ranks, I was – not fearless – but I just didn’t care how many training sessions I would do outside of Arsenal. I didn’t really care what I was eating. I was maybe staying up too late and I was just doing a lot of different stuff. But now, I actually need those extra hours to recover. At the start, I hated going to the gym just to do little stretches. Now I literally have to come in earlier to do 15 minutes of stretching, then come back in after training to do extra bits on my groin or my hamstrings.”

Nelson is a really great prospect even though he has a slow progression. Some are just late bloomers. Nelson will be seen next in action in the Conference League final against Roma on the 26 April.
