Arsenal eyeing a move for Aston Villa ace Douglas Luiz

About Football Express UK

Arsenal is reportedly keen on signing Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz as per the report in English outlet Evening Standard

The 23-years-old has been displaying promising performances since joining the Villans back in 2019 from Manchester City. So far, the Brazilian has been involved in 86 league games over the past few campaigns, scoring three goals and assisting seven times during this period.

According to the report, Arsenal has shifted their attention to signing Douglas Luiz. After missing out on their opportunity to sign Lyon star Bruno Guimarães to Newcastle United. Mikel Arteta has already worked with the Brazilian during his time at the Etihad Stadium. And he is keen on reuniting with the 23-years-old once again at the north London club.

The report further claims that Luiz is attracting plenty of interest after the contract talk of the midfielder hasn’t progressed yet. As he has only 18 months remaining on his current contract. Steven Gerrard’s side has already turned down a £30 million offer from an unnamed Premier League club. But, reports were stating that it didn’t come from Arsenal.

Should Arsenal sign Douglas Luiz in January?

Arsenal started the season with only three senior first-team midfielders in the squad. They signed Albert Sambi Lokonga during the summer transfer window. But he is a youngster and he needs time to develop his career at the north London club.

Meanwhile, the other midfielder Mohamed Elneny who is currently out – to his international duty with Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations – hasn’t featured at all this season. Granit Xhaka is another one who was heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium at the start of the season. But, in the end, he decided to stay put at the club and extend his contract.

So, only Thomas Partey who started the campaign completely focused on his future at the Emirates Stadium. The situation has become complicated in recent times after Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey were both out due to suspension. And Lokonga remained the only recognized midfielder. So, the Spanish boss had to change his formation from playing in 4-2-3-1 to 4-1-4-1 due to the lack of options in the holding midfield role.

So, signing a new midfielder is necessary for Arsenal. They are interested in signing Juventus’ star Arthur on a six months deal. But, the Bianconeri are offering to take their man for around 18 months which the north London club are not willing to accept. Therefore, finalising a deal for Douglas Luiz could be perfect for Mikel Arteta’s side.
