Arsenal are heavily linked with Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus, as confirmed by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano as well. The Gunners are in desperate need of a striker, which tops their priority for the summer. As a result, Arsenal have made Jesus their prime target for the summer. Moreover, the striker wants to leave as well, further strengthening Arsenal’s chances. Arsenal director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta are working together to land the City striker in the summer.
However, new reports have emerged that Arsenal are interested in one more Manchester City player. According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Mikel Arteta has set his sights on City winger Raheem Sterling for a transfer. Sterling’s future at City has been in doubt over the last few months. Arsenal sees this as a perfect opportunity to grab both Jesus and Sterling from City.
Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette are anticipating a summer exit which could leave the Gunners with no senior striker. Nketiah is still staring at an exit despite bursting into form, with 4 goals in his last 4 games. Arteta is looking to replace the duo, with Jesus and now Sterling in mind. Moreover, in October last year, Fabrizio Romano reported that Arteta would like to have Sterling if he is made available.
“It’s true, Arsenal would love to have him (Sterling). Mikel Arteta is in love, he is convinced he would be perfect. Man City wants more than £50 million,” revealed Romano.
Arsenal can snatch the Manchester City duo for a cut-price
One of the crucial reasons Arsenal are pursuing both Jesus and Sterling is their availability for a cut-price. As of now, Gabriel Jesus has a market value of £45 million and Sterling’s stands at £76.5 million. Arsenal would have to shell out a combined fee of over £100 million if they are to sign the Manchester City duo. However, the Gunners could avoid paying such a huge amount to acquire both Jesus and Sterling.
Both the players’ current deals with City expire by the summer of 2023. The Cityzens are pushing for their sales this summer to avoid them from leaving for free next year. As a result, Arsenal could pounce on the opportunity to buy both Jesus and Sterling for a bargained price tag.
Further on, Jesus and Sterling have both played under Arteta when the Spaniard was City’s assistant to Guardiola. Their relationship with Arteta is quite good and should be enough for them to join him at Emirates. Raheem Sterling is a proven asset in the Premier League. The winger has over 100 goals in the English top-flight across stints with City and Liverpool. Moreover, he has scored 10+ league goals in every campaign since the 2017/18 season.
Gabriel Jesus should be an exciting addition as well who has thrived under Mikel Arteta when he was at City. The current Arsenal boss coached the Manchester City forward for three-and-a-half years. In that time, Jesus scored 55 goals with a ratio of 0.71 goals per 90 minutes. His goals per 90 average with Arteta outshines the one without Arteta of 0.51.
The Manchester City duo share an excellent bond with Arteta and given the improvement of Arsenal under him, they could certainly join his ranks. Furthermore, Arsenal are on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League, another aspect which could support their negotiations.
