Arsenal are reportedly considering signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in the January transfer window.
The Gunners will look for strikers since they are likely to let go of Alexandre Lacazzete as well as Eddie Nketiah. They are also linked strongly with Fiorentina’s striker Dusan Vlahovic but they are way down the pecking order. Vlahovic is in incredible form for Fiorentina after having 17 goal contributions in 17 games. Unfortunately, Tottenham Spurs are leading the race to sign him.
According to Transposos, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund will rival the Gunners for Nunez.
He arrived at Benfica in 2020 and currently has a three and half year contract with the Eagles.
What kind of a player is Darwin Nunez?
Let’s take a look at where he comes from.
He joined Almeria as their second most expensive signing. Nunez left Almeria for Benfica as their most expensive sale.
His profile was exemplary at the U-20 World Cup in 2019 where he scored two goals in the group stage. After that Nunez moved to Spain’s Segunda division. Unfortunately, his season was rattled with injuries but Darwin made an excellent comeback.
After returning from injury, he scored 17 goals in 30 appearances.
Nunez is a striker just like Erling Haaland, certainly not as good as the Norwegian but plays like him. Darwin has good athleticism which was very effective in the Segunda division but that is not his main skill set. He has great acceleration and has amazing sprinting speed.
Darwin does not dribble around defenders much, instead, he uses his body very well and pace to get away often. As good as he is with the ball, he is also great without the ball.
Nunez makes long and sharp runs to drag defenders with him creating chances that ultimately leads to a goal. Darwin is also great in his shooting abilities, the 22-year-old hits the ball extremely well with the laces.
One aspect which he needs to improve is his link-up play. He is able to create chances for others but he is indecisive when it comes to build-up sequences. Many times build-up sequences break through him because of his lack of a proper touch or composure.
As of now, he is in the perfect team at the perfect stage to showcase his abilities. In the 2021/22 season, Darwin Nunez has scored 11 goals in 16 appearances including 3 in 5 Champions League games.
