According to David Ornstein, Arsenal wants to sign Aaron Ramsdale for £30 million from Sheffield United. The 23-year-old English Goalkeeper had joined the club in 2020 for a fee worth £21 million. Last season the Blades got relegated from the premier league after securing just 23 points last season.
Last season Sheffield United conceded 63 goals in the league. On paper it seems to be the main reason for their relegation, but is it? Sheffield united conceded the 4th lowest goals in the league but also scored just 20 goals which were the least. Aaron Ramsdale last season had conceded 1.7 goals per 90 with a save percentage of 70%. What does this say about the blades defence last season? Well, Aaron Ramsdale faced 210 shots and saved 147 of them. If he hadn’t saved half the number, he did, Sheffield would have conceded double the amount they did.
In his last two seasons in the Premier League, he averaged 5 clean sheets in the league. That isn’t his defining stat. He also averaged 3.8 saves per game which is the third-highest in the league last season.
Why Are Arsenal Trying To Sign Aaron Ramsdale This Season?
Aaron Ramsdale has 3 years left on his current contract according to Transfermarkt with the blades which don’t give Arsenal the bargaining power. But Sheffield United got relegated last season and don’t have the same amount of funds they get from the league last season. To balance out the expenses, the club is more likely to sell a player at a lower profit to recoup some value.
Arsenal this transfer market is going for homegrown English players and Aaron is another on their list. Bernd Leno has 2 years left on his deal and the club fear he might not resign with them and are planning to keep a backup for the future. While being forced into playing long balls for all of last season, Aaron Ramsdale can also contribute to the build-up. Having a pass percentage of 77% in the defensive half shows if needed he is comfortable with short passes.
Aaron Ramsdale was also a part of the England squad for the Euros. Even though he didn’t play in the tournament, the 23-year-old being selected speaks a lot for his talent. In the England camp, was said to be highly rated by the on-field staff as well.
Arsenal has placed the latest bid of £18million with add-ons to take the total fee to £25 million.
