2000th top-flight win earns Liverpool another record

About Football Express UK

The victory against Newcastle earns Liverpool another record. The Reds became the first-ever English side to have won 2000 top-flight matches.

Liverpool made this new record on their 4227th game. Newcastle United gave an early scare by taking the lead. However, the Reds won the match comfortably in the end with a scoreline of 3-1.

Goals from Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold helped Liverpool to reach this historic milestone. The game also helped the Reds to break some club records as well.

LIVERPOOL BREAKS MULTIPLE RECORDS

It was the first time that an English side has won 2000 times in the top-flight. Liverpool did go behind early in the match, but they were relentless as Jurgen Klopp and his men added another record and more importantly 3 points to their name.

Diogo Jota’s equaliser in the 21st minute was one of the other records made on the day. The goal meant that Liverpool has now scored in 32 consecutive matches, a club record. The current side now overtakes the record of 31 which was set between April 1957 and January 1958.

Jurgen Klopp made a personal milestone as the victory was his 150th victory in the league. He also became the fastest Liverpool manager to 150 victories, overtaking Kenny Daglish’s record playing 12 fewer matches.

Salah also put his name on the record book when he scored in the 25th minute. The Egyptian has now either scored or assisted in his last 15 Premier League matches. He is now equal with Jamie Vardy for the record and could make to his name in his next match.

KEEPING PACE IN THE TITLE RACE

Though records show how the club has been performing, the more important fact for the team will be the points won. Klopp will be extremely delighted for his players to come back from an early deficit to win the match.

The victory helps the club in keeping pace with League leader Manchester City. The Citizens themselves had a good match as they demolished Leeds United 7-0 at home. As it stands City has a slender one-point lead over second-placed Liverpool.

The Reds will return to Premier League action when they face Tottenham Hotspurs at the weekend. However, the increase in Covid positive cases could result in the match being dropped.

Spurs already had some of their matches postponed due to covid cases in their squad. Liverpool is also not in a good position as Virgil Van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones have all tested positive. With so many players carrying the disease, there is a chance for the match to not go as scheduled.
